The Malcolm X On-The-Job Training Program provides training opportunities for women, minorities, and disadvantaged persons in the highway construction industry. As of March 2021, there are six On-The-Job Training Program trainees enrolled in the program. Five out of six trainees are District residents, and one trainee is a woman. 90% of those who graduated overall live in the District, and 50% of those who graduated are women. Pictured on the left is the progress being made on the interchange’s south loop. It is located between Shepherd Parkway to the east and I-295 to the west. Motorists on this route are headed northbound; they merge onto I-295 after traveling beneath the bridge.
As of December 2020, five out of the seven bridges that are part of the project’s scope have been erected. The bridge (pictured to the left) runs along I-295 northbound and crosses over South Capitol Street SW. Construction for the final two bridges is underway.
In July 2020, the I-295 Malcolm X Interchange Improvement Project team erected a new retaining wall and added an additional lane for a ramp connection to the I-295 southbound lanes. The retaining wall is located along I-295 southbound, adjacent to South Capitol Street SE and south of Malcolm X Avenue SE.
On June 15th, Malcolm X contractor FMCC completed the erection of seven steel girders. This steel structure is approximately 191 feet long and is the only bridge that crosses over Interstate 295 within the Malcolm X project scope. This erection is an important milestone, as it connects the north and south sections of the 3.45-mile-long project.
On November 8th and 9th the Malcolm X contractor FMCC set the steel structure for the first of seven bridges that will be constructed under the I-295/Malcolm X Interchange Improvements Project.
